Type species of Nodopyge is Julus appendiculatus Brandt, 1841, originating from an unknown locality. The holotype of J. appendiculatus is/was a male: “Specimen unicum masculum” (Brandt 1841) but the gonopods have never been described, and the holotype is apparently lost (Golovatch & Hoffman 2001). However, there is a detail in the original description (Brandt 1841) which suggests that J. appendiculatus does not belong in Spirostreptus sensu auctorum: the preanal ring has a dorsal spine:
“Cingulum penultimum in marginis posterioris partis dorsalis medio breviter apiculatum, apiculo acutissimo, supra subcarinato-compresso” (Brandt 1841), suggesting that the species may belong in Harpagophoridae rather than Spirostreptidae. Therefore, Nodopyge cannot be considered as a replacement name for Spirostreptus sensu auctorum.
