junior synonym of Spirobolellus claviger (Verhoeff, 1939) . Remark.- After comparison of the two descriptions and the drawings
of the gonopods I have come to the conclusion that S. philiporum is
the same as S. claviger (Verhoeff). Apparently we are dealing here
with a new instance of a millipede species that has settled on remote
islands, possibly on account of human transport. For this remarkable
distributional pattern Hoffman 1981 coined the term of nesophily. It
may be that part of the published records of female Spirobolellus with
a similar colour pattern as S. claviger were actually based on the same
speCIes.
