Males are not known in the northern part of its range (Germany, Poland, Ukraine), which was interpreted as geographical parthenoge neis by Enghoff (1978). Strasser (1966) gives examples from Bulgarian caves which have indistinct unpigmented ocelli whereas they are normally pigmented in this species.
